T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS) is a professional organization that focuses on helping underserved populations in our community. TLJMS provides health education programs, youth mentoring programs, speakers on health issues, as well as health fair medical screenings to school children and adults. As dedicated minority healthcare professionals, TLJMS actively works together to improve health and wellness, access to quality care, and academic and career opportunities for underserved populations. TLJMS brings the healthcare needs of the community to the forefront and for this special speaker series session will focus on supporting provider’s knowledge on diversity in infant mental health.

Families are complex with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. A person’s background affects the their view of the world and how they seek out assistance for physical or mental health problems. Many parents get advice and support from their family, friends, and faith leaders when their child is experiencing difficulties. When an infant mental professional is needed, it is important for that provider to have an understanding on trauma-informed care and historical trauma, cultural responsiveness and cultural humility, as well as racial equity and racial bias. Someone that understands how culture is important to the families they serve and is embedded in the family’s system, behavior, development, diagnosis, and treatment is a wellspring of positive change for the family in need.

This training will review current cases and research to help learners cultivate their strengths in cultural responsiveness.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Regularly examine own thoughts, feelings, strengths, and growth areas; discuss issues, concerns, actions to take with supervisor, consultants or peers; remain open and curious
  • Consult regularly with supervisor, consultants, peers to understand own capacities and needs, as well as the capacities and needs of families
  • Use reflective practice throughout their work with infants, young children and families to understand own emotional response to infant/family work and to recognize areas for professional and/or personal development.
