T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS) is a professional organization that focuses on helping underserved populations in our community. TLJMS provides health education programs, youth mentoring programs, speakers on health issues, as well as health fair medical screenings to school children and adults. As dedicated minority healthcare professionals, TLJMS actively works together to improve health and wellness, access to quality care, and academic and career opportunities for underserved populations. TLJMS brings the healthcare needs of the community to the forefront and for this special speaker series session will focus on supporting building provider’s knowledge on high-risk pregnancy.

Some pregnancies become high-risk as they progress, while some women are at increased risk for complications even before they get pregnant for a variety of reasons. A high-risk pregnancy is one that threatens the health or life of the mother or her fetus. It often requires specialized care from specially trained providers.

Problems during pregnancy may include physical and mental conditions that affect the health of the mother or the baby. These problems can be caused by or exacerbated by being pregnant, the social determinants of health, adverse childhood experiences, race, and many other social and environmental variables. Progression of these problems may harm the mother or her baby.  TLJMS will share on support for serving families with a high-risk pregnancy and also discuss at reproductive justice: the mental, physical, social, economic, and political wellbeing of females. People of color have unique experiences with sexual rights, reproductive health, and bodily integrity. This session highlights specific issues that every health provider should know.
