Social factors, both contextual (e.g., poverty, housing, education) and interpersonal (e.g., racism, social support, stigma) are important contributors to health outcomes for all people. With an infant mental health lens- social determinants of health may be describes as access to prenatal or postnatal care, the level of health care services, healthy child development, adverse childhood experiences, racism, trauma, family economic stability, family educational level, social support, housing, and community. Understanding how these factors influence health, both individually and in combination, can lead to the development and implementation of more effective health promotion programs and policies.
This course also helps learners understand which health and illness are determined by social and economic determinants. Some questions explored include: How should we conceptualize health and risk factors in Palm Beach County? What do people need to have or do to be healthy in Palm Beach County regarding infant mental health? What processes, structures, and situations are likely to be harmful to health for families in Palm Beach County? What are the social and economic conditions that influence all of the above?
The course is a collaboration of CSCPBC and TLJMS for a special training Symposium Series on present research and resources in support of diverse families and providers growth.
